In recent weeks, the Bryan Public Library in West Point, MS has been under pressure from members of the religious community concerning the recent addition of LGBTQ+ books to their collection. Their reasoning is the content of the books, however, they’re only targeting recently added, queer-inclusive books and not books with heterosexual stories/characters with similar content that have been in the collection for years.
We pledge to support the Bryan Public Library’s inclusive efforts. We pledge to stand against homophobic efforts to bully the library to censor their collection and ban books. We acknowledge that a public library should have books that represent the entire community, include diverse and challenging material, and not be governed by religious opinion.
By signing this pledge, we are showing public support for the library and vow to stand up and speak out against homophobic and any other political or religious bullying by way of book banning and censorship. We are also asking for city officials and community leaders to publicly show support for the library.
We stand with the Bryan Public Library!
