Dear University of Virginia Administrator,
On May 4th, dozens of UVA students were met with a level of physicality- pepper spray, rubber bullets, cuffs and violent assault- that can described as nothing short of excessive. These individuals were chanting, dancing, and engaging in an overall celebratory atmosphere. There is no evidence that the students used any form of violence. In fact, The only violence was perpetrated by law enforcement against students and the faculty and community members who supported them.
These students are brave for having a conscious and participating in a worldwide student movement. By using violence against them and using harsh punishment they have further alienated and traumatized these students. Our students go to university to learn to be leaders and then are punished when they stand up for the oppressed. There was no need to expose our students to such violence. Other universities like Brown, Northwestern, Rutgers and Pomona College were able to defuse tensions peacefully without calling in state police in riot gear.
We demand that the university drop all charges against the arrested students, allow them to return to campus immediately, complete their exams, and graduate or continue their educations. We also ask that the faculty not be met with any disciplinary action as they were trying to protect the students.
Thank you, and we hope that you are able to do the right thing for your students, their families, the community at large, and the long-term health of the prestigious University of Virginia.
Kind Regards,
